What Does CBD Do For Pets?

Did you know that most mammals have the same system that processes cannabinoids (the endocannabinoid system) as humans do? The ECS is one of the 12 major systems, and it helps moderate a variety of bodily processes to keep us balanced and healthy. Cats and dogs have an ECS too, so they can benefit from CBD! Check out our article on the effects of CBD on dogs for more information about their ECS.

Is It Safe To Give My Pets CBD?

Many pet owners are concerned about whether or not it is safe to give their pets CBD. While there is not a ton of clinical research about CBD for pets yet, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that suggests it is harmless to give your pet CBD. Not all CBD is created equal, so do your research and purchase CBD products that are high-quality and deemed safe for pets to consume.

How Much CBD Should I Give My Pet?

When you purchase CBD oil, it will come in different concentrations. Be sure to read the label, so you know how much CBD to give your pet and how many milligrams there are per drop or per treat. A good standard dosage to follow is to give 1mg of CBD per 10 lbs, and up to 5mg. So if your pet weighs 20 lbs, 2 mg of CBD is considered a mild dose. 10mg of CBD for a 20lb pet would be considered a strong dose. Start with a low dose and wait between 30-60 minutes to see if you notice a change. If there is no change, you can consider increasing the dosage slightly. View our guide on how much CBD oil to give your dog to learn more.

CBD vs. THC in Pets

CBD and THC each have a different effect on your pets. THC can be toxic to your dog or cat, and they won’t enjoy consuming it as much as humans do. If your pet consumes a high amount of THC, it can be dangerous (especially if consumed from an edible), and they should be taken to the vet. THC is the psychoactive component in marijuana and can cause pets to experience low blood pressure or heart rate, difficulty standing, dribbling urine, or being easily startled. CBD does not have the same psychoactive effect as THC, so you won’t need to worry about your dog or cat having a bad reaction to CBD as long as you don’t give them too much at once.
