The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is one of the ways the body sends and responds to chemical signals. It includes molecules the body makes, receptors that can respond to those molecules, and enzymes that help make or break them down. Researchers study this network in many tissues, including skin.
Three parts of the system
- Endocannabinoids are signaling molecules made by the body. Anandamide and 2-AG are two often discussed in research.
- Receptors are among the places those signals can be received. CB1 and CB2 are the best-known cannabinoid receptors, but skin biology involves many other signaling pathways too.
- Enzymes help regulate how long signals remain available. That is part of why the ECS is a system rather than a single ingredient or receptor.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a plant-derived cannabinoid. It is not the same thing as an endocannabinoid produced by your body. The phrase “works with the ECS” can sound simple, but CBD’s actions are being studied across several pathways. A product description should not turn that complex research into a promise about what a finished cosmetic will do.
What do researchers know about skin?
A 2019 scientific review of cannabinoid signaling in skin describes ECS components in skin cells and brings together experimental work on skin biology. It is a map of a developing field, not a clinical trial of Color Up skincare.
One 2014 experimental study examined CBD in cultured human sebocytes and skin organ culture. It raised interesting questions about skin-cell behavior under laboratory conditions. It did not test a finished cleanser or serum on people, so it does not show that a Color Up cosmetic treats acne.
Why share this science?
At Color Up, education has been part of our work since the beginning. We want customers and professionals to understand why cannabinoids attract scientific attention and where the evidence stops. We choose CBD isolate for many facial formulas because a defined cannabinoid input suits our formulation approach. You can read the fuller explanation in Why Color Up Chooses CBD Isolate for Facial Skincare.
If you’re choosing skincare, begin with its cosmetic purpose, complete ingredient list, directions, and how it feels in your routine. If you have a medical skin concern, speak with a qualified clinician. Research into the ECS is a reason to keep learning, not a substitute for individual care or finished-product evidence.
