CBD can be derived from two different types of cannabis plants; marijuana or hemp. Let’s talk about the difference between hemp CBD and marijuana CBD.

Cannabis, Hemp, & Marijuana: Do They Mean The Same Thing?

The terms cannabis, marijuana, and hemp are sometimes used interchangeably, however if you want to be specific about what product you are talking about, it’s important to know the difference.

  • Cannabis: This flowering plant is part of the Cannabaceae family. There are three different cannabis species including sativa, indica, and ruderalis, that contain varying amounts of THC and CBD.
  • Marijuana: Marijuana is simply a slang term for cannabis that is thought to have been popularized by those who opposed its use and wanted to stigmatize the plant. However, the term today is widely used to describe cannabis.
  • Hemp: Hemp is a type of cannabis sativa plant with different chemical properties than cannabis/marijuana. In the U.S., “industrial hemp” has a THC content of 0.3% or less.

What is Marijuana CBD?

Marijuana CBD is made from cannabis plants that contain a higher concentration of THC. These plants can contain anywhere from 12% THC to 20% and much lower amounts of CBD, sometimes as low as a fraction of a percent. For this reason, most CBD manufacturers choose not to use these types of cannabis plants to make CBD as it is simply not profitable. It is also not legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which reclassified hemp, making it legal to grow and use in CBD products. Under this bill, legal hemp must contain 0.3% or less THC. Marijuana plants do not classify as hemp because of their high THC content.

What is Hemp CBD?

Hemp plants contain a higher concentration of CBD and 0.3% or less THC. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, these types of plants are legal to grow and use to make hemp CBD products. The CBD you can buy online or in stores is made with hemp-derived CBD. Although hemp plants do contain low levels of THC, CBD products made from hemp will not contain enough THC to create the euphoric feeling that many feel from consuming THC.

Which is Better, Hemp CBD or Marijuana CBD?

Chances are, if you’re looking to purchase CBD, it will be derived from hemp, but don’t worry, CBD made from marijuana doesn’t have any additional benefits. Regardless of where the CBD was derived, the THC content will still be lower than 0.3%. In fact, seeking out marijuana CBD could be risky. Since it is not federally legal to make CBD from plants with high THC content, you won’t be able to find it from a reputable brand. Not all CBD is created equal, so be sure to check that your products have been 3rd party tested to ensure they contain the amount of CBD they claim and don’t contain pesticides, molds, or heavy metals.
